Trained by Max Young out of Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire, Hammal represents a small yard that has managed just one winner this season. That context matters — this is not a powerhouse operation sending out well-backed favourites every week, and expectations need to be set accordingly. What is mildly encouraging, if you squint, is that the finishing positions have crept slightly forward over time: a 6th and a 7th suggest Hammal was at least getting closer to the action in those earlier runs before sliding back to 10th and 11th more recently. Whether that represents a horse still learning its trade or one that simply hit a ceiling is the question Max Young will be trying to answer.

Hammal ran just yesterday, so the yard — the trainer and the team — will be poring over that latest effort in the coming days. At five years old, there is still time to find a race that suits, but the clock is ticking, and the current record demands improvement soon.
