Half Sovereign

She is a three-year-old with a record that makes you look twice: 4 wins and 5 places from just 7 races, meaning she has won more than half her races outright and has never finished worse than second. That is not a horse who occasionally stumbles into form — that is a horse who turns up and performs. Her last six runs read 1-1-1-1-2-1 (most recent last), which in plain terms means she has won four of her last six and been placed in the other two. Only one run in that sequence ended outside the top spot.

The quality of those wins matters too. Two of her four victories have come in Class 2 races — some of the better races in Britain — and she has won 2 of the 3 Class 2 races she has entered, a hit rate of 67%. Her biggest win came at Doncaster in September 2025, where Burke was already thinking well beyond the racecourse itself. He admitted that the low purchase price had made him cautious about how high she might go, but added that she had done nothing but improve with every run, and the Doncaster victory was enough to get him looking at a Listed race in France. That instinct proved well-founded — she has since been entered for the Prix Imprudence at Deauville, a trial for the French Guineas, with the Guineas itself the target if things go to plan.

There has been one setback. A run at Longchamp raised questions about her stamina at the longer trip, and Burke said the ground compounded those doubts. She travelled beautifully into the straight but simply didn't find enough to get home. It was an honest assessment from a trainer who has been around this horse long enough to know her limits — and also long enough to see her exceed expectations repeatedly. His yard has sent out 140 winners already this season, so he knows what a good horse feels like. The fact that he is sending Half Sovereign to France for a Classic trial suggests he thinks this one might be something special.
