Hale Bopp

The signs are not encouraging. Hale Bopp has now gone without a victory for 36 months, a drought that began after winning at Dundalk in September 2023. Since then, it has picked up the occasional place — three times in the last six outings — but winning feels like a distant memory. When the regular rider Robbie Colgan is in the saddle, the record is even gloomier: one win from 13 races together, an 8% win rate that barely improves on the overall picture. The yard, run by P Sweeney at Letterkenny in County Donegal, has managed six winners this season, so there is no shortage of ability in the operation, but Hale Bopp simply does not seem to be one of them.

There is one small quirk in the form: on normal ground conditions, the horse has managed to win twice from 26 attempts, which is fractionally better than its overall record. The same applies at Dundalk, where both career victories have come. Whether that constitutes a genuine pattern or just the random scatter of a horse that struggles wherever it races is hard to say. At this stage of his career, Hale Bopp is the type of horse that fills out the card rather than the type that gives anyone hope on race day.
