Hale Bopp

Dundalk is clearly Hale Bopp's happy place. Two of its three career wins have come there, both on the all-weather surface that suits its running style. It has raced at Dundalk twenty-six times in total, so it is no casual visitor — this is a horse the trainer clearly trusts on that particular track. The most recent of those victories came on 22 September 2023, nearly three years ago now. Since then, it has been run in its last six races without finding the winner's circle, posting a sixth, another sixth, a seventh, a third, and an eleventh. That third-place finish shows some life remains, but the dry spell is long and the wins are clearly getting harder to come by.

Robbie Colgan is the horse's regular pilot, having ridden it thirteen times for one victory together. The trainer Daragh Bourke, based at Waterbeck in Dumfries and Galloway, has had a productive season by smaller-yard standards, with ten winners already sent out. On normal ground conditions, Hale Bopp manages a win rate of roughly 1 in 12 races, which is marginally better than its overall figures but hardly transformative. This is a genuine journeyman — honest, consistent in its way, but long past the point where anyone would be expecting fireworks.
