It would be unfair to write off a two-year-old after three races, though. Horses this age are still learning the job — how to jump out of the starting stalls cleanly, how to settle in a pack, how to handle the noise and pressure of a race day. Some take time to click, and a horse trained by Richard Hughes at Upper Lambourn is certainly in a good place to find its feet. Hughes has sent out 60 winners already this season from his Berkshire yard, which tells you this is a trainer who knows how to get results. When a yard is operating at that level of output, they tend to know which horses have something to offer and which don't — the fact that Hailstones In May is still racing suggests the team believe there is more to come.
For now, though, patience is the word. Nothing in the record so far suggests a horse ready to threaten the winner's enclosure, and anyone watching this one would be doing so with hope rather than expectation. The next run will be worth following simply to see whether any improvement is starting to show.
