Gunalt Wavelength

The recent form tells an interesting story. Those numbers — 2-9-2-2-4-5, reading from most recent back — show a horse that was finishing second three times in a row at one point. Three runner-up finishes is not bad luck, it is a pattern, and it raises the obvious question: what does it take to get this one over the line? The most recent run was just yesterday, so the team at Sheriff Hutton clearly believes there is a race to be won somewhere.

That yard is worth a mention. Michael and David Easterby have sent out 51 winners this season alone, which is a genuinely productive operation — roughly one winner every week or so. They are not a small outfit sending horses out and hoping for the best. When a yard like that keeps running a horse, it tends to mean they see something worth persevering with.

Billy Garritty has been in the saddle for five of Gunalt Wavelength's ten races without managing to get the win, which at this point makes him one of the most familiar faces in what has become a very familiar story. The horse has spent most of its time in Class 5 company — the entry-level tier of British racing — and has not won there in five attempts. That is the level where this horse ought to be competitive, which makes the wait for a first win all the more intriguing.

Zero wins from ten races is not a disgrace — plenty of horses take time to click, and four places shows this is not a horse that simply trails in last. But the clock is ticking. At three years old, there is still time for things to fall into place, and a yard producing winners at this rate will not have given up hope. The question is whether Gunalt Wavelength can convert one of those near-misses into something to actually celebrate.
