The most recent result — an eighth-place finish — is the low point of the form book, but dig a little deeper and there is something to work with. That third-place effort a few runs back shows Guitar Solo can mix it competitively when things click, and with only five races under its belt, a 3-year-old is still very much a work in progress. Horses at this stage of their career are often learning on the job, and a placed finish suggests the ability is there even if the full picture hasn't quite come together yet.
What gives the horse a genuine advantage is where it is being trained. Richard Hannon's yard has sent out 118 winners already this season — that is a remarkable volume of success and puts Hannon among the most prolific trainers in the country right now. A horse does not land in that yard by accident. When a trainer is firing in winners at that rate, she tends to know exactly which races suit which horses, and Guitar Solo will have every opportunity to be placed in the right spot to get off the mark. The first win may well be closer than that recent eighth suggests.
