His recent form reads 8-5-8-3-6-3 (most recent first), meaning he has not won in his last six outings, though a couple of thirds in there suggest he is not disgracing himself. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much an active participant in the sport rather than a horse winding down.

He typically runs in Class 6, which sits at the entry level of British racing — these are the races where horses of modest ability find their level and compete fairly. Within that company, he has won 1 from 7 races, or about 1 in every 7, which is actually his best conversion rate anywhere. That is where he belongs and, on his day, where he can get the job done.

His trainer, Mark Loughnane, operates out of Rock Farm in Worcestershire, and the yard has sent out 25 winners already this season — a healthy total that shows Loughnane knows how to get a horse ready to win. The challenge with Groundsman is that his sole career win came nearly ten months ago, and the question now is whether the yard can find the right opportunity to get him back in the winner's enclosure. A horse who has taken 18 races to win once needs things to fall just right — the right track, the right trip, the right day. At Wolverhampton in September, everything clicked. The search is on to find that combination again.
