Grey Fable

The horse's most familiar hunting ground is Chester, where it has become a real specialist. Two wins from seven races at the track suggest Grey Fable has found something about Chester's shape and makeup that suits it, a kind of home advantage that many horses develop over years of racing the same circuit. Its last victory came at Dundalk on 26 May, which now sits four months in the past — a long drought for a horse that has never found winning easy. Recent form has been genuinely poor. Across the last six races, the best Grey Fable could manage was a second place, with a brace of fifth-place finishes telling their own story of a horse struggling for form. Robbie Colgan, its most frequent jockey with 19 rides, has never managed to steer it to victory, though that may simply reflect the horse's overall win rate rather than any mismatch between rider and animal. Step up the class, though, and things get harder still: at the highest level tested — Class 4 races — Grey Fable has never won at all, a sobering statistic that frames the limits of its ambition. Still, at six years old with races run in its legs, there is time yet to find another winning thread.
