The win came on 19 August at Carlisle, which broke her duck after three placed finishes in her first three starts—a near-perfect record for a young horse still finding her feet. Since then, her form has wavered: a close second, followed by two third-place finishes in the races immediately after. That's the pattern you often see in a horse that's learning the game and hasn't yet worked out how to string consistent wins together, but the foundation is solid. She's won roughly 1 in every 4 races so far, and Johnston clearly sees more to come as she gets better acquainted with the track and the distance.

Johnston's comments suggest Green Area had some time away from racing last year—setbacks that, in his view, might actually have helped rather than hindered her. Horses from that family, she reckons, improve with age and racing experience. She's ready now, she says, and the plan is to step her up to a mile and a quarter, which should suit her better than the distances she's been running over. With one win already under her belt and a pedigree that suggests genuine ability, Green Area is one to keep an eye on as the season develops.
