Part of the challenge is the level Great Pepper is regularly asked to perform at. Four of its races have come in Class 3 company — solid, competitive races a rung below the very top tier — and it has won none of them, going 0 from 4. Both wins actually came in less demanding contests, which raises an honest question about whether Class 3 is simply a step too far on a consistent basis.

Charlotte Jones has been in the saddle for all 10 career races, winning twice at a rate of roughly 1 in every 5 — exactly matching the overall record, which says the partnership is as good as it's ever likely to get. The training operation behind Great Pepper is James Moffatt's yard in Cartmel, Cumbria, which has sent out 11 winners already this season, so it's clearly a yard in decent form. The horse itself raced just seven days ago and is actively campaigning, meaning the yard — sorry, the team — clearly believe there's another win in there somewhere.

Whether Great Pepper can end that 27-month drought is the only story worth watching. Two and a half years is a long time in racing. But the horse keeps running, keeps placing, and keeps turning up. Sometimes that's all you need until the right race comes along.
