Great Bedwyn

The most recent win came at York in May 2025, a track that rewards horses with a bit of scope and class, which is encouraging company to keep. Before that, the first career win arrived at Newcastle back in March 2023, and the two victories in between have both come on normal ground conditions — 2 wins from 8 races in those circumstances, a 25% win rate that is the best number on Great Bedwyn's CV by some distance. When the track rides well and the conditions suit, this horse is worth taking seriously.

The puzzle at the moment is its record at Class 3, which is where it competes most often. Across 12 races at that level, Great Bedwyn has not won once. That is a striking blank, and it hints at a horse operating right at the ceiling of what it can win at — competitive enough to place, good enough to be kept busy, but not yet able to close the deal against this grade of opponent. Richard Hannon's yard has sent out 118 winners this season alone, so they clearly know how to place horses well, and Hannon himself described Great Bedwyn during a stable visit earlier this year as honest, strong, and capable over a mile and a half — a trainer who believes there are better days ahead.

Sean Levey, who rides the horse more than anyone else, has a single win from their 12 races together — roughly 1 in 12. That is a thin return, and the last six runs without a win (form reading 3-8-2-8-2-6) show a horse that flashes into the frame and then drops away. But Great Bedwyn raced yesterday, is still very much in training, and Hannon clearly has plans. With the right ground, a drop to a level where it can actually win, and a bit of luck in running, this is a horse that has shown it can deliver. It just needs the stars to align.
