Gordon was candid about it: he took the horse there partly because owner Julian Head sponsors heavily at the track, but Goodwin did his bit too, jumping cleanly and leading throughout under jockey Freddie Gordon, who rides him in 10 of his 21 races.

Gordon senior described how Freddie "got his fractions right in front" at Plumpton, setting a pace that suited the horse and holding on when the field threatened to close him down. He is not a horse you expect to beat everyone; he is a horse who occasionally reminds you he is better than his price suggests.
