The recent form makes for tough reading. Looking at the last six races, the best result was a third place, but either side of that sits a string of mid-field and tail-end finishes, including an eighth. That is not the profile of a horse building toward something — it is one that has shown occasional glimpses without any real consistency. Ms S K Breen, who has partnered Goodmancon in nine of those 13 races, has yet to ride the horse to a win, which tells its own story. Nine attempts together with nothing to show for it suggests this is a partnership that simply hasn't clicked, or more likely, that the horse itself hasn't found the conditions or the race that suits it.
What keeps things interesting, at least marginally, is that Goodmancon raced just yesterday — so this is a horse in active training, still being placed in races and given opportunities. At six years old there is no particular urgency, but the clock is not getting slower either. For now, Goodmancon remains one of racing's nearly-horses: present, competitive enough to place occasionally, but yet to find whatever combination of luck, ground, and circumstance finally brings that first win home.
