The recent form is harder to dress up. Golden Garden's last six results read 7-6-4-5-6-4 — a string of mid-pack finishes that suggests a horse doing just enough without ever threatening to win. That sole career victory came nine months ago and has not been repeated since. At Class 5 — the entry-level tier of British racing — it has run six times and not won once, which raises a fair question about whether things need to change, whether that means distance, surface, or simply time.

What works in Golden Garden's favour is the yard behind it. Warren Greatrex trains out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire and has sent out 50 winners this season alone — a yard in good form, with horses clearly being well prepared. This is not a horse chasing glory at the top level. It is a horse that has shown, in flashes, that it can win — and whose best chance of doing so again almost certainly comes when the trip is long and the conditions give it room to travel. One winner from 14 races is slim pickings, but every horse that ever won twice had to win once first.
