The absence itself is significant. Gold Souk hasn't raced in roughly five months, and horses returning from long breaks can be unpredictable — sometimes they come back sharper, sometimes ring-rusty. The recent form figures of 8-11-7-2-5 (reading backwards from the most recent) show a horse that was at least knocking on the door a couple of runs ago with that runner-up finish, though it has gone backwards since.

When conditions are right, there is something to work with here. On normal ground Gold Souk has won 2 of just 5 races — that's 40%, which for this level is genuinely strong. It suggests the horse is sensitive to underfoot conditions and simply operates better when the ground isn't too wet or too firm. At a distance of a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs, it has won 1 from 3, which is an encouraging one-in-three hit rate at what appears to be its most comfortable trip.

That's a 20% win rate — roughly 1 in 5 — which is respectable at the bottom of the ladder, though the three-year drought since that Bath win means patience is required from anyone following this horse back to the track.
