A finish of fifth suggests there are moments where the horse is competitive, but ninth and twelfth place finishes indicate it's spending most of its time at the back of the field rather than fighting for the lead. The one placed finish in the career record remains the high-water mark.

What makes Go Avel's situation worth watching is the timing — this horse raced just yesterday, so it is very much an active campaigner. Trainer Francis Casey has sent out three winners this season from his yard, which shows the operation is capable of finding the winner's circle. Whether Go Avel can become the next one to do it is the open question. At 7 years old, time isn't unlimited, but horses have surprised people before.
