Southwell is a peculiar track — an all-weather circuit in Nottinghamshire that suits horses with a certain rhythm and adaptability — and the fact that Getmyfriend handled it well enough to win there is worth noting if it returns.

The trainer is Dan Skelton, based in Alcester in Warwickshire, and his yard is currently one of the most productive operations in Britain. Sending out 198 winners in a single season is a serious number — that is the kind of output that puts a stable at or near the very top of the sport. Horses trained there tend to be placed with care, which makes Getmyfriend's clean record of four runs with four finishes in the frame all the more plausible. Skelton's team are not in the habit of running horses where they cannot be competitive.

Getmyfriend raced just yesterday, so is firmly in the thick of its campaign right now. With the win eight weeks behind it and three placed efforts either side of it, the picture is of a horse that does its job reliably without yet having found that next gear. Whether there is more to come from a 5-year-old in a powerful yard is the interesting question — and on this evidence, it would be unwise to rule it out.
