The real story lies in the conditions that suit him. On normal, standard ground, Gemmari has won three races from eight attempts — a 38 per cent win rate that stands well above his overall record. Stretch him out over a mile and six furlongs to two miles, and that figure jumps to 43 per cent: three wins from seven races at those distances. He's a horse that seems to thrive when the ground is true and the trip is long, which paints a picture of a genuine middle-distance animal waiting to mature into his potential.

Sean Levey, the jockey who rides him most often, has partnered him three times and won on two of those occasions — a striking 33 per cent return that suggests a real understanding between horse and rider. Trainer Richard Hannon, who runs one of the most prolific yards in Britain, has been patient with the horse, gelding him to settle his mind and giving him time to bulk out. Hannon sees him as capable and well-mannered, a horse who could comfortably get two miles once he fills out further. In races at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter of his racing — Gemmari has won two from five, a 40 per cent win rate that shows he belongs at that level and could perhaps progress. Right now he looks like a horse worth following at courses and distances where the ground plays fair.
