The most recent run came just yesterday, so Gemical is very much a horse in active training and mid-campaign. That latest effort — a seventh-place finish — was the worst of the last six outings, but sandwiched in there is a third, which represents the best the horse has managed so far. The pattern of 7-3-4-5-5 across recent races suggests a horse hovering around the middle of the field more often than not, competitive enough to stay involved but not yet finding the extra gear that separates the placed horses from the winners.

Behind Gemical stands trainer Rebecca Menzies, based in Morden, County Durham, and hers is a yard worth paying attention to. Thirty-six winners already on the board this season is a serious tally — that kind of output means Menzies knows how to get horses ready to perform, and it also means she is not short of confidence when she sends one to the track. When a trainer of that productivity keeps running a horse, it is usually because they believe the breakthrough is coming. The fact that Gemical is still racing regularly, including just yesterday, suggests the team have not given up on finding the right opportunity.

For now, Gemical sits in that frustrating category of horses that have not yet translated promise into a win, but with a placed finish already in the book and a trainer in form, the first victory may not be far away.
