Gelato

Trained by Adrian Wintle at Westbury-On-Severn in Gloucestershire, Gelato runs for a yard that has sent out 30 winners this season, so the infrastructure and expertise are there. Recent form tells a story of inconsistency, though. In the last six races, Gelato has finished fifth, first (that Ffos Las win), sixth, ninth, seventh, and twelfth. The range suggests a horse that can produce the goods — the win proved that — but lacks the consistency to string performances together. The most recent outing, just a day ago, was a fifth-place finish, which at least avoids the worse results that turned up earlier in that sequence.

For a young horse with limited experience, a single win can sometimes be a stepping stone, but Gelato will need to find more of them to justify the effort. Ffos Las seems to suit — the horse has shown it can win there — and that might be worth remembering if another opportunity at that track comes up. For now, Gelato remains a work in progress, a horse with just enough ability to keep racing but a long way to go before becoming anything special.
