Gatsby Grey

The horse's recent form tells a familiar story of decline. In its last six outings, Gatsby Grey has finished out of the places in all but one, with a best effort of seventh in its most recent race just a day ago. The partnership between Gatsby Grey and regular jockey Phillip Enright, who has ridden the horse in 12 races, has yielded nothing—no wins, no consistency, just a long association without a breakthrough moment. Trainer Oliver McKiernan, based at Rathcoole in County Dublin, has kept the horse in training despite the dry spell. The yard itself has been reasonably active this season, sending out six winners, but Gatsby Grey remains stubbornly out of that winning group.

There is little to suggest a change in fortune is imminent. A horse that goes five years between victories, whose recent form consists mainly of single-digit placings, and which has never managed to win with its most frequent rider, exists in racing's long tail. Gatsby Grey soldiers on nonetheless, still racing at ten years old, still turning up to compete. It is the kind of faithful plodder that keeps smaller yards ticking over—present, consistent enough to place occasionally, but no longer a horse anyone backs with genuine hope.
