Future Cutlet

The current run of form tells a familiar story. Six races without a win, with finishes of 5th, 11th, 5th, 8th, a pulled-up run, and 6th most recently. That blank in the sequence — the pulled-up run — is worth noting, suggesting at least one outing where things went properly wrong rather than just not quite right. Future Cutlet raced just yesterday, so whatever happened last time out is very fresh indeed.

At the level where this horse has been asked to compete most often — Class 4, which sits in the mid-range of British racing — the record reads zero wins from three attempts. That is a small sample, but it does nothing to suggest a horse who is being underestimated by race planners. Trainer Karen Jewell operates out of Borden in Kent, and her yard has sent out three winners this season, so the stable is ticking along, even if Future Cutlet has not been the one contributing to that tally.

What makes this horse worth following, if anything, is the question of whether that Down Royal win represented a ceiling or simply a moment that has yet to be repeated. Twenty-one months is a long time to go without winning, and the recent form offers little obvious encouragement. But horses can surprise you, and Future Cutlet is clearly still being pointed at races with something in mind. Whether the winner's enclosure features in the next chapter is the interesting question.
