French Master

The résumé has a satisfying shape to it. French Master broke its duck at Doncaster in July 2024, and within a year had gone on to win at two of Britain's most prestigious venues. A Class 2 victory at Goodwood in May 2025 was followed by another Class 2 win at Ascot in June — and if you know anything about racing, you'll know that winning at Ascot is the kind of thing a yard puts on the wall. These are top-tier races, the sort that attract serious competition, and French Master has handled them with a 40% win rate at that level, winning 2 of its 5 races in that grade. That's a genuinely impressive record against strong fields.

The recent form reads 3-21-5-1-1-2, which in racing means the most recent result comes first: third, then a big gap back in 21st, then fifth, then two wins back to back, then second. That 21st is an outlier — the kind of blip that happens in horse racing and is usually best set aside — and either side of it, French Master was placing or winning. The overall picture is of a horse that competes hard and consistently.

Behind the horse is the Gosden yard in Newmarket — John and Thady Gosden running one of the most productive training operations in Britain, having sent out 140 winners already this season. That's not a yard that gives up on horses or places them carelessly. When a Gosden horse turns up at Ascot for a Class 2 race, it's there because they believe it can win — and French Master proved them right.

Having raced just one day ago, French Master is bang in the middle of a busy summer campaign. A horse with this kind of form, trained by this kind of yard, racing at the top venues — there's every reason to think the best may still be ahead.
