That sounds unremarkable until you compare it to the overall record, where the win rate is half that. In other words, getting the trip right doubles the chance of seeing Freedom Bay at its best. It is the kind of detail that separates a horse running in hope from one running in its comfort zone.

What does hold Freedom Bay back — at least on paper — is the level of competition. The bulk of its career, seven races in total, has come at Class 6, which is the lowest rung of British racing. Not a single win from those seven attempts. The Bath victory came when conditions aligned, and it is worth watching whether the team can find more races like that one rather than pitching Freedom Bay into contests where it has repeatedly come up short. At four years old, there is still time to build on that first win — but the record so far says this is a horse that needs everything to go right rather than one that imposes itself on a race. When it does go right, though, Bath on a June afternoon showed it is more than capable.
