Those two Class 1 wins came at two of British racing's most celebrated venues. The first arrived at Goodwood in May 2024, one of the most beautiful and idiosyncratic racecourses in the world. The second came at Newmarket in September 2025 — Newmarket being the spiritual home of flat racing in Britain, a track where the best horses in the country are regularly sorted out. To win there at the highest level is a genuine mark of quality.

The partnership with jockey Joe Fanning is worth noting. Together they have won 4 of their 13 races — that's nearly 1 in every 3, a strong ratio by any measure, and it means every single one of Francophone's career wins has come with Fanning in the saddle. That kind of consistency between horse and rider usually means they suit each other, and trainers tend to keep things the way they are when it's working.

Francophone is trained by Charlie Johnston at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, one of the most productive yards in the country right now. Johnston's team has sent out 129 winners already this season — a remarkable output — so Francophone is operating out of a stable that knows exactly how to get a horse to peak at the right moment.

The one thing to weigh up is that Francophone hasn't raced for roughly six months, returning from a break. Recent form before that layoff showed a few mid-pack finishes, so the question on comeback is whether the Newmarket win in September represented a peak or a foundation. Given the class already shown, the smart money is on the latter.
