Fort Augustus

What's particularly striking is how quickly things have clicked into place. Fort Augustus didn't win for the first time until 11 April 2026, but he then backed it up with another Southwell win on 21 May — just six weeks later. His last six races read 10-1-6-1-6, which tells the story of a horse who can look ordinary one day and very useful the next. He's raced just once in the last 48 hours, so he's very much in the thick of his season right now.

He has clear preferences. On normal ground he wins roughly 1 in every 6 races — 2 from 12 — which is a meaningful number for a horse at this level. Stretch him out to between seven furlongs and a mile and the picture improves further: 2 wins from just 7 races at those distances, nearly 1 in 3. That's a sharp conversion rate and suggests the yard have been working out what he needs. The combination of Southwell, normal ground, and a trip around a mile looks like the sweet spot.

He's trained by Charlie Wallis out of a small yard in Ardleigh, Essex — not one of the big-name operations, but a trainer who has already sent out 7 winners this season, which shows the place is in decent form. Fort Augustus typically competes at Class 5, one of the lower levels of British racing, and has yet to win at that grade in 8 attempts — both wins have come in slightly different circumstances. That's a quirk worth watching. For now, though, he's a horse who knows what he likes and where he likes it, and when Southwell comes up on his schedule, you'd be foolish not to pay attention.
