The recent form makes for difficult reading — finishing sixth, fourth, fourth, fourth, and seventh across those five outings. The cluster of fourth-place finishes is almost the most frustrating part: close enough to suggest ability, but not close enough to matter where it counts. A seventh on debut hints at early rustiness, and there are signs of gradual improvement in those mid-table finishes, but Five Moons has not yet been able to push through into the frame.
What works in the horse's favour is the yard behind it. Simon and Ed Crisford operate out of Newmarket, one of the heartlands of British racing, and have sent out 78 winners already this season — a yard firing on all cylinders. Horses in that environment are well placed to improve, and trainers of that calibre tend to keep patient with younger horses if they believe there is something worth nurturing. Five Moons raced just one day ago, so this is very much an ongoing story rather than a closed chapter.
