That one win, though, finally came. On 2 December 2025 at Clonmel, Finnicky Filly broke her duck — and at eight years old, that moment would have meant something to everyone in the yard. John Patrick Ryan trains her out of Templemore in County Tipperary, and his operation has been in decent form this season, sending out 22 winners. A stable firing on all cylinders can make a real difference to a horse like this, and Ryan's team clearly believed there was a race to be won with her somewhere.
Her most regular partner in the saddle has been Michael Kenneally, who has ridden her in 7 of her 22 races and was aboard for that Clonmel victory. Together they win roughly 1 in every 7 races — 14% — which is actually a more respectable number than her overall record suggests, and hints that the combination suits her. Kenneally clearly knows this horse, and when the conditions have come together, he has been the one to capitalise.
What makes her worth watching now is that she raced just six days ago and is clearly being kept busy. Trainers don't keep running an eight-year-old unless they believe there's another day out there waiting for her. Whether she can add to that sole win remains to be seen, but Finnicky Filly has at least proved she knows how to get her nose in front — and at her age, that alone is something worth celebrating.
