Fine Casting

Fine Casting has spent most of its career competing at Class 3 level, one step below the top tier, where the competition is serious and winning is hard. At that level, it has won 2 from 17 (about 1 in 9), which tells you this is a horse running at the right sort of grade. Trainer Ben Pauling, based in Naunton in Gloucestershire, clearly knows what he has: his yard has sent out 91 winners this season alone, and he's kept Fine Casting in training and competitive into its tenth year.

But its preferred trip of 1m6f to 2 miles has produced 1 win from 4 races at a 25% rate, which is notably better than its overall average, and points to where the next opportunity might come from.

Kielan Woods is the regular partner, having ridden Fine Casting 11 times for 2 wins — winning roughly 1 in every 5 or 6 rides together, which is a solid combination. This is a horse with a clear profile: it wants distance, it wants soft ground, and in the right conditions at the right track, it can still deliver.
