The recent form makes for sobering reading. Three of the last five finishes have been sixth place, with a pulled-up run and another sixth sandwiched in between. A "–" in the form means the horse didn't complete the course on that occasion, which adds another layer of concern. This is not a horse on the cusp of a breakthrough — it is one that has consistently finished near the back of the field.
Fine As Wine runs at Class 4 level, which sits in the lower-middle tier of British racing. Even there, it has not managed a win from four attempts. The yard, run by Gary Hanmer out of Tattenhall in Cheshire, has sent out 19 winners this season — so it is clearly capable of getting horses to win races. Fine As Wine simply has not been one of them. It did race just five days ago, so at least it is fit and active, and the team clearly believes there is a race to be won somewhere.
Whether that belief is rewarded remains to be seen.
