Strip out his shorter-trip performances and focus on races run over two miles or more, and suddenly you're looking at 3 wins from 10 races — winning 30% of the time, or roughly 1 in every 3. That is a genuinely impressive ratio, and it tells you that when Filibustering is given room to stretch his legs, he becomes a very different animal to the one who has so far drawn a blank in eight attempts at Class 4 level. Interestingly, his best performances have come on normal ground, where he has won 2 of 7 races. He is trained by Harry Derham at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, a yard that has sent out 53 winners this season alone — so this horse is operating within a set-up that clearly knows how to get horses fit and firing.

Derham himself has not been shy about his ambitions for Filibustering. Speaking last November, he pointed to the Challenger Series Final at Haydock in the spring as a realistic target, adding that he believed the horse had plenty more improvement in him and that his best performances were still to come. That kind of confidence from a trainer in a productive yard is worth paying attention to. Paul O'Brien has been aboard for 5 of his races, winning once — a 20% win rate together, or 1 in every 5 rides. He raced just one day ago, meaning whatever comes next will arrive quickly. On current form, over a long distance and on reasonable ground, Filibustering looks like a horse with unfinished business.
