Trained by S Woods out of Newmarket — the traditional home of British flat racing — Fiefdom is part of a yard that has clearly been in decent form this season, sending out 24 winners. That makes the horse's own struggles slightly harder to explain. When a trainer is winning regularly with other horses, a young one that keeps finishing mid-pack is usually still learning, still finding its feet, or waiting for the right conditions to click. Four races is genuinely not many for a three-year-old, and plenty of horses have taken longer than this to show what they are capable of.
What is encouraging, in a narrow sense, is that the form improved race by race before yesterday's setback — going from sixth to fifth to fourth suggested something was slowly coming together. Whether that eleventh-place finish was a blip, a bad day, or a sign that the improvement has stalled is the question the team will be asking right now. With the season still live, there is time to find out.
