Trained by Barry John Murphy out of a small yard in Caerfyrddin, Carmarthenshire, Ferando has so far failed to trouble the judge in any of his nine career outings. A yard that has produced just one winner this season gives some context — this isn't a powerhouse operation throwing horses at races and expecting results. Every run matters, and every disappointment stings a little more.
The most revealing insight into where Ferando stands came from Murphy himself on a stable tour last December. He spoke of being "very disappointed" with the horse's run at Newbury — not angry, not resigned, but genuinely puzzled. Something went wrong that day, and they couldn't quite put their finger on what. That kind of comment tells you this isn't a horse the trainer has written off. There's still belief there, still a sense that Ferando has something to give. Recent form shows a fourth-place finish among his last six outings, which at least hints that he can get competitive — but converting that into a first win remains the challenge.
At six years old, the window isn't closing just yet, but it's not wide open either. For Ferando and the Murphy yard, the next few runs feel important.
