The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Her last two runs produced finishes of ninth and sixth, suggesting she is currently going the wrong way rather than building toward that elusive first win. Earlier in the season she posted three consecutive fourths, which at least hinted at some consistency near the lower end of the places, but she has drifted further back since then.
There is some reason for cautious optimism in who has her in training. R Mike Smith's yard at Galston in East Ayrshire has sent out 25 winners already this season — a healthy total that shows this is an operation that knows how to get horses to win races. The fact that Falcon Queen has not yet clicked into gear is not necessarily a reflection of the yard's ability; young horses can simply take time to work things out. She raced just yesterday, so she is clearly fit and active, and her the yard have not given up on finding the right opportunity for her.
At this stage, Falcon Queen is a horse you watch with patience rather than expectation. The potential is unproven, the form is modest, but she is young, she is racing regularly, and she is in capable hands. Sometimes that is all you can say — and sometimes that is enough.
