The pattern of success tells you something about what suits this horse. On normal ground, Expound wins roughly one in every three races — five wins from 15 starts — a dramatically higher rate than its overall figures suggest. Move to wet or muddy ground, or to fast, dry ground, and the horse becomes ordinary. It also performs noticeably better over longer distances, with two wins from nine races beyond two miles, the kind of stamina test that sorts out the serious stayers from the also-rans.

At this stage of its career, with age and a losing streak working against it, the horse's best days may well be behind it, though those Ballinrobe entries should always be worth a second look.
