The recent form makes for fairly sobering reading: the last five runs have produced finishes of seventh, thirteenth, eighth, third, and fifth — and that third place remains the closest it has come to winning. Raced as recently as yesterday, this is clearly a horse still being tested and developed, which is not unusual for a young two-year-old still finding its feet in a competitive environment.
What works in the horse's favour is the quality of the yard behind it. Richard and Peter Fahey have sent out 23 winners already this season, which tells you this is a stable that knows how to get horses to perform. When a yard of that calibre keeps running a horse, it usually means they see something worth persevering with — a two-year-old that finishes thirteenth one day and third the next is clearly still working things out. Whether Explainingislosing eventually justifies that faith remains to be seen, but for now, the Fahey team appear happy to keep searching for the right opportunity.
