Trained by Nick Kent out of a small yard in Brigg, Lincolnshire, Exiguus is part of a modest operation that has managed one winner this season. That is not a criticism — small yards across the country are the backbone of British racing — but it does mean expectations should be kept measured for now. Nick Kent will know this horse better than anyone, and there may be a specific type of race or set of conditions he is waiting to find for it.

What is perhaps most notable is that Exiguus raced just 14 days ago and remains an active runner, so the team clearly have plans for the horse rather than putting it away for the season. Whether those plans yield a first win remains to be seen, but the improving finishing positions across those three races — from sixth down to fourth — at least suggest the horse is learning. Sometimes that is enough reason to keep watching.
