Trained by Archie Watson at Upper Lambourn in West Berkshire, Exclusive Code is in one of the busiest and most productive yards in the country right now. Watson's operation has sent out 63 winners already this season — a number that reflects a yard firing on all cylinders and capable of placing horses in races they can win. For a young horse still finding its feet, being trained by someone with that kind of momentum matters. It means the decisions being made about where and when Exclusive Code runs are coming from a team that clearly knows what it is doing.
The recent form shows two fourth-place finishes either side of that Newbury victory, which is a pretty honest picture of a horse that is competitive without yet being dominant. But the win itself is the thing to hold onto. Newbury is a proper track — a long, fair gallop that tends to suit horses with a bit of class rather than ones who just get lucky on a tight bend. Winning there as a three-year-old, this early in the season, suggests there is something genuine underneath. Whether Exclusive Code can back that up next time out is the question worth watching.
