Exactly Right

Since that victory nearly two years ago, Exactly Right has not won again. Its last six runs tell the story: an unplaced effort ten races back, then two fourth-place finishes, a third, another third, and most recently an eleventh on the track where it found its form. The horse is not striking a terrible run — those fourth and third-place finishes suggest it is still competitive — but the absence of a second win is becoming noticeable. Over its entire career, it has won just 1 of 9 races, a win rate of roughly 11 percent, which puts it firmly in the category of a solid minor-league performer rather than a regular winning machine.

The one clear pattern in Exactly Right's record is distance. When racing over 1m1f to 1m2f — the stretch between just over a mile and a quarter — it wins 1 of every 3 races, a 33 percent win rate that stands out sharply against its overall form. That Southwell win came over the right trip, and it would be worth watching whether the trainer, Neil Mulholland's Limpley Stoke yard, can find similar opportunities. Mulholland's stable has sent out 60 winners this season, so there is competence here. When Exactly Right races in the middle-ranking Class 4 events that tend to suit it best, however, it has not won in five attempts, suggesting it may have risen above its natural level when it claimed that Class 2 prize. The horse is active and clearly capable of running well enough to place, but a second win may prove harder to come by than the first one took to arrive.
