What makes that Lingfield win worth noting is where it came in the context of the season. Gary and Josh Moore, the father-and-son training team based at Lower Beeding in West Sussex, have been in excellent form this season — 99 winners and counting — so when one of their horses finally breaks through, it tends to come from a yard that knows what it is doing. Everest has clearly taken time to put it all together, and the patience required to get there is considerable.

The distance range of 1 mile 6 furlongs to 2 miles appears to suit best, with that 1 win from 7 races at those trips representing a 14% win rate — wins roughly 1 in every 7 races at the right trip, which is noticeably better than its overall record. That tells you the horse needs a genuine test of stamina to bring out the best in it. Curiously, at Class 5 — the level it has competed at most often — Everest has never won in 7 attempts, which suggests the horse may actually be better suited stepping up in class where stronger pace and more serious competition can play to its strengths.

Recent form has been a mixed picture. The sequence of 4-2-7-1-3-12 over the last six races captures a horse that can hit the podium but also disappear without trace. That win sits right in the middle of the sequence, bookended by solid efforts and a couple of disappointing ones. Regular partner Niall Houlihan has yet to find the combination that produces a winner, with 5 races together and nothing to show for it — though that single win did come with a different rider in the saddle.

Having raced just one day ago, Everest is clearly kept busy, and with the yard firing on all cylinders, the hope will be that Lingfield was the start of something rather than an isolated highlight.
