Euchan Falls

Both of those wins came in a tight three-week window back in early 2023 — first at Musselburgh in February, then at Ayr the following month. That was the peak, and it now sits 37 months in the past. Since then, Euchan Falls has gone to the races 6 times without winning, and the recent form figures of a seventh and a fourth suggest it is still running respectably without quite finding that extra gear when it matters.

The vast majority of its career has been spent in Class 5 company — the bread-and-butter level of British racing, where the fields are competitive but the prize money is modest. Winning 2 of 31 races at that level, a rate of roughly 1 in every 15, is not a number that sets the pulse racing, but it does confirm this is a horse operating at the right level for what it can do. Trainer R Mike Smith, based in Galston in East Ayrshire, has had a productive season with 25 winners from the yard, so the infrastructure and knowhow are clearly there.

Jockey Danny McMenamin has been the regular partner, riding Euchan Falls in 15 of its races and winning on 2 of them — that is 13%, or roughly 1 win in every 7 rides together, which is actually a considerably better return than the horse's overall record suggests. The partnership clearly suits. With a race just yesterday, Euchan Falls is very much still part of the furniture — a reliable, familiar face at the smaller tracks of Scotland, doing what it has always done.
