Whatever it is, Thirsk suits Eternal Sunshine in a way few tracks suit any horse.

Jim Goldie's yard at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire has sent out 88 winners this season alone, which tells you this is an operation that knows how to place a horse. Goldie has spoken warmly about Eternal Sunshine as a homebred — meaning she was bred by the team, not bought in — and said they deliberately gave her time to mature rather than rushing her through. That patience paid off, particularly at Doncaster in September 2025, where she landed a Class 2 race, one of the better races in the British calendar. Jockey Lauren Young described her as full of confidence that day, carrying minimal weight and quickening away smartly — the hallmarks of a horse producing her best. That was 10 months ago, and she has not won since in six outings, with recent finishes reading 13th, 10th, 9th, 4th, 2nd, and 6th.

Still, a second place in that run of six is no disgrace, and one bad experience — at Ayr, where Young reported losing a stirrup out of the stalls and the horse doing too much early as a result — skews those numbers somewhat. Paul Mulrennan, who rides her most often, has won 5 of their 16 races together, which works out at nearly 1 in 3 — a strong partnership by any measure. The question now is whether the Goldie yard can find the right spot to get her back into the winner's enclosure. Given her Doncaster form and her love of Thirsk, the ingredients are clearly still there.
