What makes Etalon genuinely interesting is his love of wet ground. On soft or muddy terrain, he wins roughly half his races — four victories from eight attempts. This is the kind of edge that makes a horse valuable: trainers know exactly when to pitch him in. He stays best over two miles to two and a half miles, which gives him options across the jumping calendar. Harry Skelton, his regular jockey, has ridden him to six wins from 22 races together, a 27% win rate that suggests they understand each other well.

The recent form tells a tale of selective racing. His last six runs show a fifth place followed by a third, a fourth, another third, and a win at Perth most recently — the kind of pattern you see when a trainer is picking their spots carefully rather than chasing easy money. Etalon does struggle at the highest level: at Class 2, he has just one win from ten races. But step him down, get him on the ground he likes, and find a race that suits his two-mile sweet spot, and Dan Skelton's yard has shown they can make it work. At nine years old, with proven ability and a jockey who knows him, Etalon is built for consistency rather than stardom — and right now, that seems to suit him just fine.
