Across 15 career races, Estacas has won twice and finished in the places seven more times — a decent record, but one that tells the story of a horse that competes consistently without quite breaking through. It races mostly at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the racing pyramid, and at those events it has won 2 of 8 races, or exactly 1 in 4. That's a solid return. Its first win came at Ascot in October 2021, a track that carries a certain prestige even for midweek racing, and its second came at Huntingdon in May 2023. That second win was now 37 months ago — nearly three full years without a victory, which is a long wait by any measure.

The last six races have all come back empty: a fifth, a sixth, and three eighths, with a second in that run the only crumb of comfort. It raced just yesterday, so it is very much in active training rather than winding down, and the team clearly believes there is still something to work with. The yard behind it — Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, training out of Elmbridge in Worcestershire — has sent out 49 winners already this season, so this is not a quiet operation struggling for form. When a stable that productive keeps running a horse, it usually means they think the right race is still out there.

Brendan Powell has ridden Estacas six times and won once together — that's roughly 1 in 6 — and remains the most regular partner. Whether the combination can click again likely depends on whether the horse can get its ideal trip on a day when everything else falls into place. At nine, the window isn't unlimited. But the raw numbers at the right distance suggest the talent hasn't entirely disappeared — it's just been frustratingly quiet for a while.
