The win came on 1 September at Gowran Park, and it remains his only success from five races so far—a 20 per cent win rate that, while modest on paper, is respectable for a horse at this early stage of his career. Since that breakthrough victory, though, the results tell a mixed story. His most recent run, just yesterday, saw him finish sixth, and before that came a tenth-place finish and a fourth. A second-place finish earlier in the sequence suggests he has the ability to run well at times, but consistency remains elusive. This kind of erratic form is not unusual in two-year-olds; the challenge for his trainer is to work out whether these are growing pains or genuine flaws.
Daniel James Murphy's Curragh yard has had a solid season, sending out 14 winners, and Murphy will be hoping Equus Victor can chip in with more victories as the colt matures. The fact that he has won once already puts him ahead of many of his peers, and his Gowran Park success suggests he has the talent to do it again. Whether he becomes a regular winner or merely a decent horse that shows up for a cheque now and then may depend on how much he improves over the coming months.
