Empire Rising

What is worth noting is the consistency of the recent form. In its last six runs, Empire Rising has finished fourth four times, with a third and a first sandwiched between. That pattern of mid-field finishes punctuated by occasional better days suggests a horse that is not out of its depth but is also still some way short of being a standout talent. The win at Beverley broke the ice, which always matters for a young horse — once they have tasted winning, the question becomes whether they can do it again. Four weeks is not an unusual gap between races for a two-year-old, and with the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, the yard at trainer Charlie Clover's Newmarket yard are clearly intent on keeping it active and racing while the season still offers opportunities.

Clover's yard has had a solid season, with 24 winners sent out already, which puts Empire Rising in a reasonably well-resourced operation. For a young horse still learning its trade, that kind of setup — a trainer with momentum and plenty of runners in action — can be exactly what is needed. Whether Empire Rising develops into something more than a honest middle-distance performer remains to be seen, but it has already proved it can win, and at this early stage in its racing life, that is enough to keep watching.
