Over a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four, Elsass has won 2 of its 6 races — that is 1 in every 3, a sharp improvement on its overall record. Distance, it turns out, is the key. Give it enough ground to build into a race and it becomes a different proposition entirely.

Those two wins have come at opposite ends of its career. The first arrived at Chelmsford in August 2025, and the second — more recently — came at Southwell just this week in April 2026. Two very different tracks, but the same pattern: Elsass arriving when it matters. Recent form of 1-10-2-1 across its last four runs tells a story of a horse hitting a real purple patch, alternating wins with a runner-up finish and only one proper off-day in between.

Joe Fanning has been the regular partner, sitting aboard for 8 of its 10 races and picking up 1 win from those — winning roughly 1 in every 8 rides together. That is a modest return, but the horse's recent improvement suggests the combination may have more to give. Behind the whole operation is trainer Charlie Johnston at Middleham Moor, one of the most productive yards in the country this season with 128 winners already sent out. That level of firepower matters — horses in well-run stables tend to be placed in the right races at the right time, and Elsass looks like it is benefiting from exactly that kind of management.

Competing mainly at Class 5, it is not yet mixing it with the elite, but a horse that wins 1 in every 5 races, places in half of its starts, and is currently in form is the kind of straightforward, reliable type that any trainer values. Whether there is a step up in class on the horizon remains to be seen, but right now Elsass is doing what it does best — winning races.
