The real clue to what Elsass does well lies in its distance preferences. When asked to run between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs, the horse has won 3 of 9 races — a striking 33% win rate over that stretch of ground. It was in one of these sweet-spot races at Chelmsford that Elsass claimed its maiden victory on 21 August 2025. Compare this to its overall record of just 17% across all distances, and you see a horse that has found a niche but hasn't quite capitalized on it as much as it should. Over the longer trips, it looks comfortable; on anything shorter or much longer, the legs seem to tire.

Trainer Charlie Johnston's Middleham Moor yard has had a productive season with 131 winners, so there is form and competence there. Joe Fanning has been Elsass's regular pilot, though the numbers between them tell a cautionary tale: 1 win from 8 races together, a 12% win rate that sits well below the horse's overall record. It may simply be that a different rider could unlock something, or that Fanning and this particular horse have not quite clicked. Most of Elsass's competitive outings have come in Class 5 races, where it has won 1 of 5 — solid, if not spectacular, at that level. The horse remains a battler: three wins from eighteen races suggests it has the talent to go places, but the lack of recent form and that stubborn dry spell mean it will need to find its feet again soon.
