Ellusive Butterfly

The career numbers tell an encouraging story. Three wins and four placed finishes from nine races means Ellusive Butterfly has finished in the top positions in seven out of nine outings — missing out entirely on a share of the prizes on only two occasions. That kind of consistency is not something every horse manages. A win rate of roughly 1 in every 3 races is genuinely good; plenty of horses run their whole careers without getting close to that figure.

The journey started at Southwell in January 2026, which is where the first win came. Southwell in winter is about as unglamorous as British racing gets — an all-weather track in the East Midlands, often drawing small fields on cold Tuesday afternoons. Winning there is not the stuff of headlines, but it gets a horse's career moving in the right direction. The fact that Ellusive Butterfly has since gone on to win at Carlisle in the summer suggests genuine improvement as the year has progressed.

Behind all of this is trainer K R Burke, based at Coverham in North Yorkshire. Burke's yard has sent out 145 winners already this season — a number that puts it among the busiest and most productive operations in the country. Getting 145 winners in a single season means the team is placing horses well, keeping them healthy, and finding the right opportunities at the right time. A three-year-old with three wins sitting in a yard like that is well positioned to add to its record.

The recent form reads 1-1-7-4-4-2, with the most recent result first. Two wins on the bounce at the top of that sequence, a seventh before that, and a couple of fourths — this is a horse that looked ordinary not long ago and has responded by winning twice in quick succession. Whether that momentum continues is the interesting question, but right now Ellusive Butterfly is a horse that arrives at the track with something to build on.
