The Doncaster win did come at a distance that suits — Electric Lightning has produced its best racing over seven furlongs to a mile, winning once from eight attempts at those trips, which works out at roughly one win in every eight races. That is not a dazzling conversion rate, but it does suggest the horse has something to offer when conditions and distance align. Step outside that range, though, and the record gets thinner still.
Mark Walford's yard at Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire has been in good form this season, sending out 35 winners, so the training operation clearly knows how to get horses to the track in the right shape. Electric Lightning, however, has not been among those winners, and the partnership with regular jockey Jack Garritty has yet to click — they have ridden together six times without a win between them. That is not necessarily a damning statistic, but it is the kind of record that invites questions about whether the combination will eventually come good, or whether a change might shake things up.
Most of Electric Lightning's races have come at Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing, where the horse has won once from five attempts — that is a 20% win rate at that level, or roughly one in every five races. At that grade, Electric Lightning is at least competitive in theory. The horse raced just yesterday and remains active, so the yard will be hoping that the right race at the right trip can produce a second career win before too long. For now, though, patience seems to be the main requirement.
