El Lambo

The horse's breakthrough came at Bath in May, and the win at Wolverhampton nine days later showed it wasn't a one-off. Between those victories, however, there have been harder days — a string of mid-field and out-of-the-frame finishes that remind you racing is rarely linear, especially for a young horse still maturing. The most recent run was a fourth-place effort, so El Lambo is being asked to strike again quickly, which is the reality of racing at this level.

Charles Hills trains El Lambo from his base at Lambourn in Berkshire, a yard that has already sent out 29 winners this season. Hills knows how to get juveniles ready, and the fact that El Lambo has found the winner's enclosure twice suggests the training is on track. At two years old, this horse is exactly where it should be — learning its trade, winning enough to suggest ability, and still with plenty of racing ahead to improve.
